Nthabiseng was a fiercely independent young mother with a job, a purpose, and ambitions of furthering her studies. But when she lost her sight, she lost her freedom.
“My mother had to do everything for me,” she recalls. “She prepared water for my bath, cooked for me, cleaned for me, and even waited outside the bathroom.”
Nthabiseng’s late mother was her greatest pillar of support.
But when she was ready to bravely reclaim her life, friends like you were waiting to step in!

These life-changing SANCB programmes are equipping her with essential daily skills: like cooking, shopping, using a smartphone, and navigating the world with a white cane.

Not long ago, Nthabiseng couldn’t leave her home without relying on someone else.
Today, she confidently walks nearly 600m to her local tuckshop, shops on her own and manages her money independently – and is even planning a solo trip to the Mall of Africa, some 18 kilometres from Tembisa.
Sadly, Nthabiseng’s experience is not unique. Every day, blind and partially sighted South Africans are prevented from studying, working, travelling and participating fully in their communities simply because they lack access to the training and assistive devices they need.
